Radiosonde found

Dear finder

Did you find a Swiss radiosonde?
These probes are launched three times a day from the Payerne aerological station (an operation of the Swiss Meteorological Institute). A rubber balloon filled with hydrogen gas, about 2 meters in diameter, carries the probe to an altitude of 35,000 meters in 90 minutes. There the balloon bursts and the probe floats back to the ground on the parachute.

During the flight, the probe has radio communication with the radar of the ground station in Payerne. It contains instruments that measure air pressure, temperature, humidity and ozone and transmit them to the ground station via the small probe transmitter. The radar device receives these signals and also measures the wind speed and direction. The results are evaluated by a computer in Payerne and immediately exchanged in the international network of meteorological services. They are important for the aviation weather service, the weather forecast and for environmental research.

The probe can be used again, so we ask you to return it.

Usually you will find a suitable plastic bag with our address on the probe. If this material is missing, you will find the necessary information below. Please cut the cords according to the sketch, put the styrofoam box in a cardboard box or plastic bag, tape it up and post it with an address label.
